Not too long ago, scripts that read out passwords were more common. That type of system security is good provided you keep your system secure and some user doesn't have a \"ps -ef\" loop running in an attempt to capture that sensitive info (though some applications mask passwords in \"ps\" output). There is a program called \"shc\" that can be used to add an extra layer of security to those shell scripts. SHC will encrypt shell scripts using RC4 and make an executable binary out of the shell script and run it as a normal shell script. This utility is great for programs that require a password to either encrypt, decrypt, or require a password that can be passed to a command line argument. I was introduced to this application recently and WOW, can I tell you, it is making me a bit more paranoid of my scripts! But the utility is pretty strong and useful for providing added security. Since this is a shell script, you need to modify it to your needs and customize the utility in order to fit what you want- otherwise it may not be as easy to use. By modifying the \"shc\" program, a user can pass a password to the scripts just by including the command. Please be aware that this file contains a password which is set automatically to mysqldump. You would need to change the URL to the location of your database.
What if you needed to protect a file, and it was password protected? Simply add the password to your script (e.g. desktop.file), change src/desktop.file to something like src/admin/desktop.file, then delete the original file. 7211a4ac4a
